Meet Freya, British artist, designer and founder of Tawul Living.
Selling beautifully unique and luxurious organic cotton towels, Tawul are here to transform your bathroom routine. Each towel is designed to last, absorb every drop of moisture and bring a splash of colour to your life.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TAWUL?
Tawul is a lifestyle brand striving to magnify your moments with towels made from 100% organic cotton.
I've always wanted to use my art background to design a product that can be used by everyone and also be a piece of art, whilst using materials that don't have negative environmental impacts. I wasn't able to find any organic cotton towels with designs on that I could take with me to the beach or use at home and feel good about rolling out in front of my friends.
Months of research led me to discover that less than 1% of the world's cotton farmed is certified organic. I was shocked at this number, especially after understanding about the benefits of organic cotton farming practices compared to conventional methods of farming. I spent months iterating many designs, before eventually getting in touch with some towel manufacturers in Portugal to bring my vision to life. Finding a company that was able to adhere to all my sustainable requirements (labels, swing tags, polybags, etc) was tough!
To constantly question every practice we put in place and every decision we make so that Tawul can be a brand who are actually trying to implement an ethical, sustainable culture and product. Also, progress is central to the ethos of the brand. If something is not working, we will iterate, transform or completely change what the brand is doing in order to be more in line with what we are trying to achieve.

All the designs are inspired by vintage matchboxes I found in a box on the floor at Brick Lane market. I loved the colours, but also the blocked designs framed in rectangular forms. This is why there is a solid line kissing the edge of the towels. For the limited edition towels, endangered insects are at the core of the design inspiration. I chose 2 out of the 2000 endangered UK insect species, The Bilberry Bumble Bee and The Garden Tiger Moth.
Yes, absolutely! When I was an interior designer, idea inspiration for projects originated from a variety of sources similar to how the design ideas for the the towels came about. Whether it be art, culture, the environment, food etc. Every concept was rooted in the inspiration surrounding us.In terms of art, I use bottletops as the source of material for my works. Appreciating art in what are typically mundane waste objects inspired me to create art with another every day product, towels. I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have a piece of art that I use everyday when washing and bathing.

WHY IS SUSTAINABILITY AND USING ORGANIC COTTON SO IMPORTANT TO THE BRAND?
As difficult as it is to be completely sustainable when producing a product, striving to be a genuinely sustainable brand is at the core of Tawul's ethos. I grew up on a farm surrounded by sustainable organic farming practices and have seen in practice how a business can be carbon neutral. This has been definitely driven me to create a product that is not only incredibly comfortable and pleasing on the eye, but also focused on positive environmental & social impact.
