HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DISCERNING PALETTE?
The Discerning Palette is an online art gallery with a large collection of modernist art works at affordable prices. It was founded by two friends who want to make art more accessible to all.
We started the Discerning Palette with the broad aim of making art approachable and affordable. We want to break down existing barriers to art - for example, the preconceived notion that art is only for collectors who have lots of money and/or big walls in fancy houses. We choose pictures based not on name but on quality, subject matter and a visual connection. In the art world, so much emphasis is placed on the name behind an artwork, falsely convincing people that unless an artwork is by someone famous, it doesn't hold much value. We are here to argue, and prove otherwise.

We source art from anywhere really. It just has to catch our eye! This could be at auctions, markets or antique fairs. For us it's all about the potential for connection, both aesthetically as well as intuitively. We pick pieces that have something special about them that draw you in - whether it's texture, colour, or subject. We definitely don't shy away from bold and quirky pieces either. Everyone needs some fun on their walls.
This is probably the hardest to answer because we adore every piece we've ever bought in..We would say this fun cubist horse painting is among our favourites. It now hangs in a trendy bar in Dublin called Kodiak.

1. Don't worry too much about imperfections. Sometimes original art that is on the older side can have areas of paint loss, or cracks in the paint, or scuffs to the frame. These can often add character and charm to a piece, and show off its age.2. Don't be afraid to mix and match when choosing art pieces to add to your collection. Quite often when pictures are of different mediums or styles, or are within different types of frames, this mix can tell a story and add an eclectic charm to your space.3. If you're sourcing art it often means you've found a spot on your wall that you need to fill. It is worth being open to the idea that art doesn't always need to hang on a wall. It can be fun buying smaller pieces of art that you can lean on a kitchen shelf, a bookshelf, or a bedside table. This means you can move your art around easily and always change up the look of your space.
If you're buying your first piece of art and are not sure where to start, choose a piece that reminds you of a place, a piece of music, something you love or someone you know. You'll keep it forever.
