Meet Claire and Nicky, circular design duo and founders of bobandalf. Believing in the value of circular design, bobandalf create beautifully unique household objects from household waste. Their minimal designs + simple forms have a playful quality, whether it be their shape or a pop of unexpected colour - they are guaranteed to make a statement in any home. We caught up with them to find out how the brand started, what inspires their designs and why circular design is so important to the brand.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE BOBANDALF?

We are bobandalf, a UK design duo and 'purveyors of good waste'. As creative wasters we believe in the value of circular design and sustainably made objects. We make household objects from household waste. We design, make and sell our handmade objects, creating small bespoke collections and one-off pieces. Some are functional. Some are not. 

Our partnership is key in the creation of our practice - a combination of skills and friendship. A mix of backgrounds in graphic design, 3D design, curation and arts management.

bobandalf is a nod to our grandfathers (both carpenters), in recognition of their hand-making skills and wisdom. 

A walk, a talk, a visit, a day out can trigger ideas and responses. Ideas and concepts are paramount but at times the material can lead the shape of the final form. So, what can trigger us? A respect for both the urban and rural environment; appreciation of Scandinavian and mid-century design, art, photography, fashion and architecture; an admiration for creative practitioners pushing boundaries with new materials and sustainable approaches to making.Travel is a constant source of inspiration in so many ways - the colour of a tile, the angles of a building, glowing sunlight in the golden hour. 

Nature and respect for the environment is at the heart of our design and philosophy through our choice of materials and circular design ethos. We-use and Re-use to bring back a purpose. 

We are a newly launched practice, and are now ready to push forward with our next phase. Larger scale works and furniture are in the pipeline as is developing our combination of materials.
