What inspires your designs?

Inspiration for my designs often comes from my experiences of places I visit and the people I spend my time with. I will often visualise a pattern in my mind of how I want a design to look, and then a conversation with a friend or stranger will impact and inspire the way the pattern evolves - it might sound strange, but it seems to have worked so far. When I'm not in London for work, I try to escape back to Dorset. It's where I grew up and a special place where I draw a lot of inspiration from the beaches and countryside. There are also some beautiful country houses in Dorset where I spend hours exploring; one of my favourites is the National Trust - Kingston Lacy. It's a treasure trove of antiques, art and the most amazing fabrics.

During the pandemic, I moved back home to my parents' house in Dorset. If it wasn't for this time, I might not have discovered the art of hand-printing. It's how I spent and enjoyed my evenings. I had dusted off my sewing machine and was making clothes and interior decoration pieces - it was when I used some linen fabric left over from an old uni project that I discovered my love of print. I'd made some cushion covers, and the fabric was very plain - I wanted something more exciting! After designing a pattern, I ordered a lino-printing kit and inks and began hand-printing onto materials I had at home (it was very messy, I think my parents were happy when I moved my printing elsewhere!).I love using vintage and second hand fabrics, giving then a new life. I started creating Instagram Reels showing my process, and people began asking if they could buy my prints - this was all the makings of launching Calver.

Working for luxury fashion brands has hugely influenced my design process. I'm not naturally very patient and find it difficult sitting still for too long - working in a fast-paced fashion environment suited my impatientness very well. However, it taught me that if you want to create and design something beautiful and unique, it requires a lot of patience, planning and time to make it happen.I learned the importance of investing in high quality materials and how beautiful designs can completely transform how someone looks and feels. One of my favourite memories of working in fashion is garment fittings. Whether it was a celebrity, model or someone visiting the retail store - no matter how stressful they were at the beginning of their fitting, you would see the stress melt away once they put on a garment they loved - leaving with a big smile on their face. It's what I think about when I create my designs - is this pattern going to make someone smile - will it brighten up their home and enrich their living space?

What do you love most about creating your pieces?

Switching off from the digital world and any madness around me and getting lost in being creative.

I think the world needs big, bold and beautiful colours and patterns right now. I'm feeling inspired by "safe" design. I think a house should feel like it's lived in and loved - hand-made, crafted and high-quality interior pieces will always  give a lasting impression and have a story behind them - a great talking point for when you have guests over!I love to style Calver alongside beautiful pieces of art and antiques - all special items you will want to cherish forever.
